Description

People have been using wooden sleds, rollers, and skids of one sort or another to move material efficiently and quickly since before the Egyptians built the pyramids and the Qin Dynasty built The Great Wall of China.

With the invention of the low lift hand truck in 1887 the wooden pallet began to appear in American factories. Initial pallets were little more than skids & stringers attached to a top deck. As lifting technology improved over the 20th century (an all-steel low lift truck in 1909, the high lift fork truck in 1915, a basic modern lift truck by 1926) pallets were also improved. By adding bottom boards, pallets were able to hold more, stack more easily, and offer greater protection to goods.

During World War II, the use of pallets increased.  Unloading a box car filled with cases of canned goods could take days. The same car loaded with cases on pallets could be emptied in hours using a forklift.

A common sight on loading docks, in alleys, and behind buildings  these all wood details will add a sense of realism to your model scenes.
